Understanding Health Insurance
Health insurance is a vital tool that helps cover medical expenses, including doctor visits, hospital stays, prescriptions, and preventive care. By having insurance, you can access necessary healthcare services while significantly reducing out-of-pocket costs. In the U.S., health insurance options vary, but they all aim to provide financial protection and peace of mind during medical emergencies.

How to Apply for Health Insurance
Applying for health insurance involves several steps, depending on your eligibility and the type of coverage. Our trained navigators are here to assist with:
Health Insurance Marketplace Applications
Compare and enroll in private health insurance plans through the Marketplace, which offers plans categorized into Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum tiers based on costs and coverage. You may qualify for financial assistance, such as subsidies or tax credits, to reduce your monthly premium based on your income.
Medicaid and Medicare Enrollment
Our team can help you understand and enroll in these programs.
- Medicaid: A state and federally funded program providing free or low-cost health coverage for low-income individuals and families. Eligibility is based on income, household size, and other factors.
- Medicare: A federal health insurance program for people 65 and older, certain younger individuals with disabilities, and those with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). We assist with understanding Medicare plans, including Part A (hospital insurance), Part B (medical insurance), Part C (Medicare Advantage), and Part D (prescription drug coverage).
Maryland AIDS Drug Assistance Program (MADAP) Enrollment
MADAP offers free or low-cost medications for people living with HIV who are uninsured or underinsured. If you qualify, MADAP can help cover prescription costs and provide support in accessing life-saving medications.
Open Enrollment Period
The Open Enrollment Period (OEP) is the time each year when you can apply for a new health plan or change your existing coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace.
- Typically runs from November to mid-January (dates may vary).
- If you miss this period, you may not be able to enroll unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) due to life events like job loss, marriage, or childbirth.
