FAQ about HIV Treatment
Will my treatment stop me from passing HIV to others?
Yes, if you take HIV medication (antiretroviral therapy, or ART) consistently and achieve an undetectable viral load, you cannot transmit HIV through sex. This concept is known as U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable)
How long do I need to take HIV medications?
HIV treatment is a lifelong commitment. Taking ART daily helps keep the virus suppressed, maintains your health, and prevents transmission.
What if I forget to take my medication?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it’s close to your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your regular schedule. Missing doses frequently can make the virus resistant to treatment, so consistency is important.
Are there side effects?
Some people experience mild side effects such as nausea, headaches, or fatigue when they start ART. However, modern HIV medications are generally well-tolerated. If you have any concerns about side effects, talk to your healthcare provider to adjust your treatment plan.
