Our Story
Over 20 years ago, HIV was a crisis—both here in Prince George’s County and across the globe. In the early ‘90s, Dedra Spears Johnson and the late Sally Joseph, two passionate health professionals, saw firsthand how African Americans—especially women—were being overlooked in the fight against HIV. Despite growing public health efforts, many communities remained underserved, and the impact of HIV continued to rise.
Dedra and Sally knew something had to change. They envisioned a different kind of care—one rooted in culture, love, and community. Sitting at their kitchen table, they create a plan to provide compassionate, person-centered sexual health services- meeting people where they were. Heart to Hand was born—a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to ensuring that Black communities, women, and all those at risk had access to education, testing, treatment, and support.
What started as a small community-driven effort has grown into a trusted leader in sexual health and HIV care, serving Prince George’s County and the greater DMV area. Today, Heart to Hand continues to empower, educate, and advocate, breaking down barriers to care and ensuring that every person has the support they need to live healthy, thriving lives.

In Memoriam
Sally Holloway Joseph (1956-2009) was the co-founder of Heart to Hand, Inc., which was established in 1999 to “make a difference by encouraging people to never give up and invest in themselves in order to have a better quality life.” Sally’s Mission was to serve the disenfranchised, underserved, and underinsured. Sally wanted to ensure that Heart to Hand, Inc. would continue to provide HIV/AIDS, Outreach, Tobacco, and other intervention/prevention programs.
